ArtVerona, the fair dedicated to modern and contemporary art that will be held from 15 to 17 October at Veronafiere, presents its rich programme with 143 participating galleries, under the artistic direction of Stefano Raimondi and in collaboration with ANGAMC. This edition sees new important entries and significant confirmations ranging from the modern art sector to emerging realities still to be discovered, with many initiatives that will involve the public, both at the fair as well as in the city.
The fair is divided into seven sections, with several new features: aside from the modern and contemporary art galleries of the Main Section, ample space has been given to emerging and experimental realities, to residencies, non-profit spaces and art magazines. The new section Evolution is composed of 6 galleries that work with artists capable of developing their research using artificial intelligence , social network, robotics, video games, 3D animations, Coding, Big Data and nanotechnology. In particular, Galleria Zero… presents CUCCCHI, the first artist’s archive conceived as a real video game for the latest generation consoles that allow you to explore the world of the artist Enzo Cucchi. Introduction, among the main novelties of this edition of ArtVerona, curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, hosts 6 young galleries highlighted by some of the important and recognised “historical” Italian galleries. Lab1, curated by Giulia Floris, is the new project dedicated to artistic residence and non-profit experimental reality active in Italy for contemporary art. 7 spaces have been invited to develop a project for the fair, in dialogue with an institutional residence programme active in Italy. Solo is the section that invites 9 participating galleries to highlight a young Italian artist with a monographic project, while Next is the space dedicated to 15 galleries, each of which presents and promotes up to three talents of the most recent generations. Pages is a special project, curated by Ginevra Bria, that accompanies the traditional section dedicated to publishing, inviting 6 magazines – Archivio, Exibart, ISIT.magazine, Kabul, Perimetro and TBD ULTRAMAGAZINE – to present their story, the role of critics, information and the connection with the artists, immersed in the Italian art system, through a monographic curatorial project.
One of the many novelties of this edition of ArtVerona will be visible immediately at the entrance of the fair; visitors will be greeted in the Galleria dei Signori with a new and exclusive project capable of redefining the space. Paola Pivi, one of the most important international artists, has created an installation of almost 500 square metres for the fair that will take the shape of a completely liveable carpet entitled Stop by. With this project Paola Pivi tests herself in the creation of a large carpet, which offers a dual use: visitors can walk on the work, to reach the exhibition halls, or admire it from an elevated perspective, from the balcony overlooking the space. The collaboration between ArtVerona and Paola Pivi is based on a common and profound attention to environmental issues: the carpet is in fact made of ECONYL®, a nylon yarn made of 100% recycled plastic waste (fishing nets, carpets, fabrics, industrial waste, etc.) thanks to the partnership with Aquafil S.p.A., one of the main global players in the production of synthetic fibres from recycled material, in its first collaboration for the realization of a work of art. Once the event is finished, the carpet will be preserved and reused again, as part of a circular and sustainable process.
ArtVerona has strengthened its commitment to the Italian System with three new awards, bringing the total number of prizes promoted by the fair to 12: the Massimiliano Galliani Award for Under 35 Drawing, dedicated to design and emerging visual research; the De Buris Famiglia Tommasi award, open to all young Italian and foreign figurative artists under 35; and the RAR-Rural art residency award, dedicated to artists whose research is oriented towards the relationship with the environment and the territory. All the other awards are confirmed: Icona award, A Disposizione. acquisition fund, Veronafiere for art, Level 0, A Collection, Studio Montani Tesei under 35 award, Casarini Due Torri Hotel award for under 35 painting, MZ Costruzioni award, Display award and Sustainable Art Prize, promoted by Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice.
In addition to the aforementioned LAB1 and Pages, there are many other appointments that will involve the public at the fair: the new podcast project Talknow!, curated by Maria Chiara Valacchi, which will include in-depth live radio broadcasts with artists, gallery owners, curators and collectors, talking about new projects, exhibitions and curiosities during this new phase of restart, revealing the curiosities and attractions of this new and unprecedented edition of ArtVerona 2021. Saverio Verini will be in charge of the StandChat conversations between the public and the artists and, for the first time, also with the gallery owners who represent them, thereby extending the dialogue to another key figure in the art system.
ArtVerona presents, in collaboration with Verona’s main public and private institutions, Art & the City, a programme of cultural initiatives dedicated specifically to collecting, performance and video art. From Friday 15 to Sunday 17 October the Museo di Castelvecchio will host the three appointments with Performance&TheCity, curated by Claudia Santeroni and Maria Marzia Minelli, with performances by Marijke De Roover, SAGG Napoli and Sophie Jung, three international artists who will present their interpretations of some of the most urgent themes on which contemporary life demands reflection. On Friday 15 October at Palazzo Poste as part of the Video&TheCity programme, the exhibition BLAST estetiche della violenza tra immagine, video e documento (BLAST aesthetics of violence between image, video and document) (15-19 October 2021) curated by Jessica Bianchera and Marta Ferretti, will be inaugurated with the participation of a selection of internationally renowned artists together with young artists including Regina José Galindo, Santiago Sierra, Daniela Comani, Inhabitants, Amir Yatziv, Elisa Caldana, Diego Tonus, Michal Martychowiec, Rebecca Moccia, Simona Andrioletti, Sofia Borelli, Chiara Ventura, who use video and moving image to analyse and bear witness to different categories of violence, often incorporating new technologies and modes of digital circulation. Saturday 16 October double appointment at Palazzo Orti Manara: with the exhibition Collection&TheCity/Ciak Collecting: Collezionismo Italiano Attivo, curated by Irene Sofia Comi. The exhibition aims to map the Italian collecting scene by examining some of the individual and collective realities that characterise the figure of the collector as a protagonist of the scene and activator of shared experiences. At the same time there will be the presentation of Critical Collecting. Antologia 2016-2020, a publication curated by Antonio Grulli that represents one of the most detailed surveys of the world of Italian collecting that has involved 50 art critics and just as many collectors to date. ArtVerona takes place on Sunday 17 October together with the Vinitaly Special Edition, an event created with the aim of restarting the wine sector with an innovative, professional format and a strong vocation for internationality. VeronaFiere has activated an important protection protocol against Covid-19 to guarantee all exhibitors, visitors and organisers a safe stay in the halls without compromising the sense of visiting the event.
